Birth

Mohsin Naqvi was born on May 5th, 1947, to a man named Syed Chirag Hussain, who worked as a saddle maker, and later opened his own food vending business.

Childhood

Originally, Mohsin was named Ghulam Abbas, but later, he changed it to Ghulam Abbas Mohsin Naqvi. Raised in a family of six other children, Mohsin grew up in the small neighborhood of Muhallah-e-Sadat near Dera Ghazi Khan, one of the central cities of Punjab, Pakistan.

Education

He attended the Government College Bosan Road, Multan to complete his graduation, and later, he moved to Lahore to pursue his master’s degree from the illustrious University of Punjab.

Poetic Profile

Soon, he began penning down and publishing his poetry, which gradually began to garner him fame and popularity. Soon, his sharayi and ghazals were being recited in every corner of the country, garnering immense appraise from people of Pakistan.

 

 
 

 

Poetry Tendency

Mohsin Naqvi’s work was largely dominated by his unwavering love for the Ahl-e-Bait, and he has written extensive poetry about Karbala, which continues to be read and recited all over the world. He became a prominent member of the literary circles of Lahore and Punjab. His involvement in political activism proved to be a source of inspiration for millions that shared his faith.

He also wrote about romance and lovers, but his work largely dealt with powerful topics, such as the uncaring and selfish rulers of the world. He would ignite his readers with hair-raising words that would instill a strong sense of liberation.

Mohsin Naqvi penned down the song, “Lahron ki Tarah” for a film, ‘Husn-e-Bazar, which garnered him the National Film Award.

He is accredited for writing many famous Urdu poetry books, including Khaima-e-Jaan, Taloo-e-Ashk, Rida-e-Khawab, Rakht-e-Shab, Azaab-e-Deed, Band-e-Qaba and Furat-e-Fikar among others.

On the eve of 15th January, 1996, Mohsin Naqvi was murdered in the main Bazar of Lahore. His death was mourned by millions across the country, and his funeral was attended by a saddened sea of fans. His funeral prayer was conducted by Allama Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi, the Chief of the Tehreek Nafaz Fiqh-e-Jafariya at Nasir Bagh, in Lahore.

Later, his body was taken back to his birthplace and ancestral home, Block # 45 Dera Ghazi Khan, for that was the only place he could truly rest in peace. Thousands of people gathered to see their favorite poet being lowered into his grave.

After being shot, Mohsin Naqvi recited the following verses, which became to be known as his last words:

Le zindagi ka khums Ali(A.S) k ghulam se

Ay maout aa zaroor magar ahtraam se

Aashiq hon agr zara bhi aziyat hui mujhy

Shikwa kron ga tera main apne Imam(A.S) se
